Meridian Street End Volunteer Clean-Up

In June, the Friends of Haller Lake Meridian Street End Volunteer Group cleaned up the public access area where Meridian meets the north end of Haller Lake. Our target was continuing removal of the troublesome invasive plant, Japanese knotweed, and other invasive plants. In Fall of 2020, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) began a restoration project to improve the health of Haller Lake (see Dec. 2021 Splashes). In September 2021, after the troublesome invasive plant, Japanese knotweed, was removed for the second time, extensive plantings of native plants took place. The new plantings were maintained by SPU for about a year, after which responsibility for the area reverted to Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT). Now cleanup is primarily by our Street End Volunteer Group and helpful neighbors. Our work party on June 3, 2024, yielded 400 pounds of vegetation which we took to the North Transfer Station (voucher provided by the Adopt-A-Street Program). We found only two small pieces of trash!

The volunteer group included Bob Brooks, Kippy Irwin, Carol Jaeger, Karen Sheide, and Carolyn Crockett. We plan future work parties to subdue the Japanese knotweed, blackberry bushes, laurel, and other invasive plants. If you would like to be on the contact list to help us, please email me.
