Prizes:

1st  Place - Gift Card for Lil’ Tiger Ice Cream

            2nd Place - Gift Card Lil’ Tiger Ice Cream


Categories – Any dessert pie, from blueberry and Rhubarb to Pecan and Buckeye, from single crust to double crust, all are welcome!

Homemade Pie Contest Rules

  1. a)  This contest is open to bakers of all ages!

  2. b)  Pies must be entered in the name of the person who made it.

  3. c)  Contestant may enter one pie.

  4. d)  Each Pie must be made from scratch and based in a 9” – 10” pie plate/pan. 

Enter a Pie

  1. a)  Bring your Pie to the contest site, Haller Lake Community Club between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm on August 27, 2022. At this time your pie will be given an entry number, maintaining confidentiality of the bakers.
    You do not need to be present to win.

  2. b)  By entering this Contest, you agree to and Acknowledge:

    1. The entered pies become the property of the Haller Lake Community Club and that you do not get your pie back.

    2. If you win, you give your permission to have your photo taken during the announcement ceremony (or later) and have it used by the Haller Lake Community Club.

  3. c)  A list of ingredients must be provided, on a 3x5 card or 8x11 paper,  contestant name and phone number, at time of drop off. This information will be kept confidential.

Judging

  1. a)  Judging will start at 4:30 pm. Winners will be announced at 5 PM.
    *Judges will not be present at the contest table while pies are delivered to ensure confidentiality of the bakers.

  2. b)  Judging area will be "off limits" to all but Judges and Pie Contest Committee members.

  3. c)  Minimum of three Judges

  4. d)  Criteria – Each pie will be judged on the following, out of 100 possible points:

    1. Overall Appearance – points 1-20

    2. Crust – Color, Texture, Flavor – points 1-20

    3. Filling – Consistency, Moistness, Flavor – points 1-20

    4. Flavor – points 1-20

    5. Creativity – points 1-20

  5. e)  Scoring

    1. Each judge assigns a numerical value in each criteria category, without consultation with the other judges.

    2. The pie receiving the highest total numerical value is the winner. The Pie Contest Committee will tally the judging sheets.

    3. In the case of a tie, the judges will judges those pies again.

    4. The decision of the judges is final.

Junction Point Homeless Shelter Off 128th Street

 I was able to tour the Catholic Community Services Homeless Shelter, Junction Point, last week.  This shelter is located at 1132 N 128th St. near Stone Way and 128th St.  There shelter is a series of small, individual building for the residents that look something like "tiny homes".   I met up with Sharonda Duncan, Division Director within CSS Homeless Services.  She manages 4 of CCS's shelters around Seattle.  This shelter became active last June.  It has capacity for 49 individuals, men or women who are 50 years old or older.  The shelter is currently at full capacity. The shelter does utilize volunteers from the community.  They can use help with their plants/gardening and putting together hygiene packs and move out packs for the residents.  If you are interested, you can visit the shelter and ring the door bell.   Let’s build soil! This time of year gives us a great opportunity to build our soil. If you haven’t picked up your leaves yet, please consider using them. Also, how about woodchips in your yard? Nature is amazing at building healthy soil if we get out of the way and let it. From The Archives - December 2024

As a teen floating around the Lake on my all wood paddleboard I made in the 1960s, I couldn’t help but notice the many flowering lily beds tucked on shorelines.  The bright green pads fashioned as designer plates looked stunning against multi- colored full-open flowers.  Add blue dragonflies whizzing about to get the full effect.  R. C. Byers, an early Haller Lake pioneer dating to 1910s, was known as the “lily man” not to mention he built his own cabin, cleared land, and replanted trees, shrubs and…25 varieties of lilies.  A story appeared in Sunset magazine “The Lily Grower of Haller Lake” claiming his status.  Our own Shawn MacPherson’s aunt, Anne Segale, told her local kids would sell Mr. Byers lilies at Pike Place Market. Today many Lake homeowners have the coveted lilies, well, perhaps some are coveted. Baldwin School Report

  I interviewed Guillermo Covajal, social worker at Baldwin.  Twenty elementary schools are considered for closure in SSD for 2025-26.  In any case, the new and large Baldwin will take on twice their number of students.  Not a done deal yet, but Broadview looks to close sending their staff and students to JB.  District officials will speak at Baldwin on October7, at 6:30 under the topic “Well Resourced Schools.”  With the huge school deficit, the meeting will cover cost saving measures. We’re off to a good start with 3rd grade science.  Our overarching theme is saving orangutans from lost habitat due to palm oil production.  Students look at three islands as refuge.  They study the landscape, collect climate data and do weather experiments.
