HARKNESS PARK UPDATE
The sun is starting to shine! Harkness park in growing! There are a few new things happening at the park.
A nearby neighbor is working on making identification signs for the plants, shrubs and trees. Soon you will be able to take a walk through the park and see the names of the plants that are growing.
There is a new archway trellis (a cattle panel from tractor supply) growing two different types of hardy kiwi vines. Both varieties (Jenny and Issai) are self fertile and good fruit produces in our climate.
A new dwarf Cavandish banana tree is starting to grow at the north end of the park. These amazing plants have a large carbon storage and can also sequester a large amount carbon dioxide. They are helpers in regulating climate and reducing global warming.
Don’t miss the FREE woodchip pile at the north end of the park! If you haven’t tried woodchips before, please come take a bucket or two or more. We are encouraging everyone to get to know arborist woodchips by trying them in your home garden or landscape. These wonderful chips are great at helping to build healthy soil, adding nutrients, and lowering your water usage by holding moisture during the summer months. You can add them in your veggie box, in your flower pots and around your shrubs and trees. It’s great for replacing your lawn - use overlapping double thick cardboard and then a thick layer of woodchips. It also helps improve areas that are nutrient depleted, too damp, too dry or too tough to dig in. If you have questions, please email me at kippyirwin@gmail.com. We are going to have free woodchips available at the north end of the park (off of 125th on Ashworth Ave N) for people to pick up. If the pile is out, please check back. We will try to keep it stocked throughout the summer. You can also get free woodchips delivered to your home at getchipdrop.com or by calling a local arborist in your area.
Many thanks to everyone who is donating time and plants!
