Creatures Around the Lake - Wildlife Here at Haller Lake

Wildlife Here at Haller Lake

A friend spotted a dead fish on the shores of Haller Lake. We retrieved it and showed it to a few neighbors. I took a few pictures! Several have commented that it was a Wide Mouthed Bass. It was approximately 18 inches long. You can see it had another smaller fish in its mouth which might be a Sunfish. Some conjectured that possibly the Bass died biting off more than it could chew?

We decided to put it in a pail and see if any wildlife creatures would be interested in a good meal since we had no takers amongst neighbors. The above two pictures show what we saw the next morning!

The Bass was cleaned out completely, but the smaller fish was left untouched!

Shawn MacPherson just told me that she saw two Bald Eagles flying through the air. One had a squirrel in its talons and then dropped it. The other Bald Eagle retrieved it. They both flew on. Shawn was recharging her phone so got no video. She told me to add this story to my Splashes’ entry! Another neighbor told me a Bald Eagle flew into her yard over her smaller dog, but thankfully made no move to pick it up. Her dog is much bigger than a squirrel! What an amazing place we all live! Keep your eyes open at this wondrous time of year and send pictures or stories for all to enjoy!

Thanks, Marita Niemann
