Harkness Park, Spring Edition
An herb spiral is a fun way to grow a large amount of herbs or veggies in a small amount of space. Often made out of stone or bricks, it's a way to create a microclimate with both dry and wet soils and both sun and shade areas. At Harkness Park we will use herbs. This will attract pollinators like bees, butterflies and hummingbirds which will help to pollinate the fruit trees and shrubs growing in the park. It will also help to attract good bugs that eat bad bugs. As the herbs grow it will be here for the community to harvest and enjoy. Please remember to share by taking only what you need and leaving some for others and the birds.

She’s also used sticks to mark off the areas where we
shouldn’t walk. We could still use a few
more thick sticks to small logs if you have any you can drop off.
Neighbors have been very generous with plant contributions! We have purple iris from Mary and Conrad
Hammons; blueberries, thimble berries, snow berries, wild rose and woodland
strawberries from Rachel Van Nooord and Ben Peterson; and thyme and chives (in
the lovely herb spiral) from Edgar (at 125th and Densmore).
