Northgate Ped/Bike Bridge: March 2020 construction update
COVID-19 Update

At the City, we continue to follow guidance from our partners at Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC), Washington State Department of Health (DOH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding COVID-19. We're working round-the-clock to ensure our communities and our workforce can stay safe and healthy.

Currently, the Seattle Department of Transportation is planning to continue with construction in your area. We are working closely with our Public Health — Seattle & King County partners, our construction management teams, and private contractors to ensure that everyone supporting this project is cautious and safe. If there are changes to the construction schedule or planned work, we will notify you once public information is available.

The City of Seattle and King County are taking steps to protect the health of our community by making recommendations that are meant to slow the spread of novel coronavirus and reduce the number of people infected. Please learn more about COVID-19 at www.kingcounty.gov/covid

Recent work

We recently placed a temporary shoring wall in the North Seattle Park & Ride (on 1st Ave NE near NE 100th St) to provide access for the construction of bridge pier foundations. (See the photo below)

What we've heard

Some of you have been asking about the trees that are being removed for this project and what we're doing as a result of this construction impact.

As described on our webpage, 93 trees will be removed to successfully perform construction work. In order to address removals, we're implementing a tree mitigation plan, which has been reviewed and approved by state and federal agencies and includes planting nearly 500 new trees.

At least 14 of these trees have been designated for salvage and will be cut into logs, branches, and root wads that will be installed along the watercourse to further enrich the fish and wildlife habitat. (See the image below for more details)

What to expect during construction

  • Some noise and construction vehicle activity, including cranes
  • Some nighttime and weekend work
  • Detours for people walking and biking
  • Lane reductions on Northgate express lane on- and off-ramp
  • 2 freeway closures and detours on weekends and at night only as soon as March 2021
  • Construction staging and parking impacts near the construction sites, including at the northern side of North Seattle College along N 100th St and on NE 100th St at 1st Ave NE
  • Closure of the North Seattle Park & Ride on 1st Ave NE
